A Comparative Study on the Taboo of Love and the Consciousness of Transmission - Focusing on "Dallae River" and "Bride Rock", the Legends of Korea and Turkey

Abstract

The taboo of love for socially unacceptable objects is constantly being reproduced as one of the core motifs of narrative literature in both East and West. This is because such problems of taboos and violations imply the conflict of desires and ethics encountered in universal human life. However, some examples show a completely different consciousness of transmission on such a universal problem. They are the legend of the Korean "Dallae River" and the Turkish "Bride Rock(Gelin Kayası)". Both legends are based on the taboo of the love for the object of desire which is contraindicated by the concept of social ethics. So the ethical taboos, both of which are valued above human desires, shape the protagonist's tragic ending. However, in the "Dallae River", we question the situation in which an absolutely valued ethic hurts humans by acknowledging the natural aspects of human desires which are valued above the incest taboos. In The "Bride Rock", the rituals of transmission in the direction of advocating the absoluteness of ethics were confirmed in a situation where the fateful and pure love of men and women causes a conflict with social ethics. In a situation where love creates a conflict with social ethics, a consciousness of transmission in the direction of the absoluteness of ethics has been confirmed. In situations where human desires and ethics conflict, Korean enjoyment groups recognize the naturalness of human desires, while Turkish enjoyment groups emphasize the absoluteness of ethics and both are looking for opposite answers to the same problem in different ways. Desire and ethics are essential elements of human life. Therefore, taking and discarding either side in the conflict of two values ​​cannot be the perfect answer. In this regard, the fact that we were able to compare the legends of Korea and Turkey looking for different answers to this problem and to confirm their consciousness of transmission may be an opportunity to expand each other's perception by checking the non-recognized answers in the socio-cultural situation of each enjoyment group through the other party. This can be an opportunity to expand each other's awareness.
