The aim of the study was to evaluate the relation between placental bed biopsy findings and fibronectin levels with the clinical severity of preeclampsia syndrome. Thirty-five women with preeclampsia/eclampsia were compared with 25 healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies. Serum levels of fibronectin were measured by radial immundiffusion technic, Twenty-one placental bed biopsies from preeclamptic pregnancies were compared with 17 from normal pregnancies. Placental bed biopsies were taken at caesarean section. In preeclampsia/eclampsia, fibronectin levels were higher than in normal pregnancy. Normotensive women all had normal placental bed biopsy findings and the incidence of pathological bed biopsy findings increased with the severity of the preeclampsia. The plasma levels of fibronectin were significantly increased with the increments in diastolic blood pressure (r=0.49, p<0.001). As a conclusion, the present study confirms a relation between the pathological events in the placental bed and endothelial damage in preeclampsia.
