Valorization of peach (Prunus persica L.) waste into speciality products via green methods
Abstract
The current study aims to develop an environmentally friendly method for the valorization of an over-produced biowaste (peach peels) into speciality products. Several 3 factor 3 level statistical multivariate methods (3-level factorial, face centered central composite, and Box-Behnken designs) together with response surface approach have been compared in order to identify the most economical experimental design. Deep eutectic solvent (lactic acid/glycerol mixture, 1/1) was used in order to propose a green method. Homogenizer-assisted extraction was applied. Addition of water (10, 30, and 50%, v/v), extraction time (30, 60, and 90 s), and speed of homogenizer (6000, 8000, and 10,000 rpm) were selected as independent variables, while total polyphenols and chlorogenic acid yields of extraction were dependent variables. The selected multivariate optimization methods have been found suitable and statistically significant (P < 0.0001) for the current experimental data. On the other hand, Box-Behnken design would be a better choice with better reasonable statistical criteria and less number of experimental work. According to the proposed statistical design approach, the second power of homogenizer speed has been the most effective parameter (P < 0.0001) on both dependent variables. This study has been the first to analyze several 3 factor 3 level statistical multivariate methods for the extraction of speciality products from a biomass.
