Bone Morphogenetic Proteins and the Application Fields in Dentistry
Abstract
Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are members of the transforming growth factor-b (TGF-b) superfamily of growth factors. BMPs have been demonstrated in studies to have potential usage for tissue engineering and regeneration of alveolar ridge augmentation, cartilage repair in the TMJ, oral implants, endodontic treatment, regeneration of periodontal tissues and reconstruction of osseous defects. In this review the possible future developments in BMPs, concerning research and clinical applications are reported.
