Health Sociology Studies in Turkey

Abstract

This paper aims reviewing the foundation, development and current situation of sociology of health and illness (medical sociology) in Turkey. In this respect, first of all, the emergence of the field as a sub-field of sociology will be elaborated through demonstration of the content of medical sociology. Secondly, the significant phases within the development of medical sociology will be shown by analysing preliminary works. Thirdly, after this historical cast of the field of medical sociology, the extent of the field in Turkey will be explained within a twofold basis: the extent of the field within books and articles, the extent of field within dissertation thesis and curricula of sociology departments. Fourthly, the paper will be concluded by evaluation of the current position of the field by the above given data.
