Industrial decentralization in Istanbul and its impact on transport
Özet
The general tendency in a number of metropolitan cities of the world where metropolitan area problems have been considerably alleviated is toward making the urban macro form into a multicore structure and decentralizing industry on regional or national basis. The aim of this study was to examine decentralization policies to be implemented in Istanbul and to consider the impact of the multicore urban model on urban transportation. In the first section of this paper, areas in Istanbul with potential for further development are determined using the dynamic Lowry model. In the second section, scenarios regarding the decentralization of industry are generated based on the results obtained from the first. In the third section, the traffic-flow results of the current situation and scenarios over the current transportation system are obtained. The conclusion reached is that the decentralization of industry in Istanbul and transforming the city into a linear and multicore structure do have positive impacts on various aspects of the urban transportation system.
